Why working with content creators can be a winning strategy for the food sector?

Influence Marketing has a huge scope of action, especially for the food industry, which allows professionals to imagine many creative and innovative schemes for several reasons:

HelloFresh relies on micro-influencers with its #RefreshWithHelloFresh campaign

You’re probably familiar with HelloFresh, but did you know that it is the world’s first meal kit company? Founded in 2011 in Germany, the brand has quickly become a global success. With a global presence in fourteen countries and three continents, the company has grown to become the largest player in the global meal kit market.

The reason HelloFresh is so popular today is due to the Influence Marketing strategy it has successfully implemented on social networks and in particular on Instagram. Having developed a very photogenic product that is perfectly in tune with the current trend, the brand lends itself perfectly to influencer marketing. Moreover, HelloFresh has fully integrated the potential offered by this performance lever and has become a master in the art of identifying relevant micro-influencers for its brand and its various campaigns.

In 2019, for its «#RefreshWithHelloFresh» campaign, aimed at the UK market, HelloFresh has teamed up with 15 micro-influencers evolving in different sectors (lifestyle with Rosie, decoration with Jennifer or family with Coral) as well as with the celebrity Davina McCall, who was, for the occasion, the face of this Influence Marketing campaign. For this #RefreshWithHelloFresh operation, the brand commissioned the group of content creators to participate in a 21-day long campaign to try out different HelloFresh recipes.

The aim of the campaign was to promote the ease, convenience and enjoyment of cooking at home that its DIY packed lunch delivery service offers. The campaign resulted in HelloFresh increasing impressions by 274% and receiving 325% more content.

With #RefreshWithHelloFresh, HelloFresh and The Influencer Marketing Agency (IMA) also won some great accolades at the 2020 Influencer Marketing Awards:

  • Influencer Marketing Awards 2020 Winner,
  • Silver Award for Best Food and Drink Campaign,
  • Silver Award for the most effective collaboration or partnership.

Oreo launches exclusive collection with Chiara Ferragni

Most brands activate KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) by asking them to advertise their brand or products through a post or stories on their social networks. The famous American cookie brand, Oreo, went a step further by collaborating with Instagram star Chiara Ferragni (26.3M followers on Instagram) to launch a limited edition product with a packaging design inspired by the Italian KOL’s style.

And that’s not all! Oreo also launched a capsule collection inspired by Chiara Ferragni that users could win by participating in various competitions organised on social networks.

Through this Influence Marketing campaign, launched in March 2020, Oreo reinforced its «cool» image among millennials and Generation Z by partnering with a very popular content creator. Moreover, with her huge community, Chiara Ferragni has given the brand a huge global reach, greatly amplifying the collaboration and its performance. The video published by Chiara Ferragni on her Instagram account received more than 246K likes and was seen by more than 2M internet users. The photo of the packaging designed especially for their collaboration also generated a very high level of engagement with more than 639K likes and thousands of comments. A more than successful operation!

Danone: focus on an in-store Influence Marketing campaign

In 2021, French brand Danone teamed up with its Portuguese ambassador Cláudia Vieira for a highly original in-store Influence Marketing campaign. Instead of focusing solely on social networks, Danone wanted to offer a real in-store experience with a special Influence Marketing campaign that took place directly at the point of purchase where its consumers are.

With Tokinomo, the advertising robot used on the shelves of the supermarket, Danone was able to take advantage of influencer marketing and use its ambassador as a real storyteller. We all know that consumers love stories and brands can greatly increase their loyalty with well-chosen and defined storytelling. The voice of the content creator, via the Tokinomo robot, captured the attention of shoppers as they shopped i shop. Once their attention was captured, they were able to listen to Cláudia Vieira’s story about her experience with the Danone brand.

The results speak for themselves: as consumers were «attracted» in a creative and differentiating way, they naturally ended up buying more, 10 times more in fact. Regular in-store promotional campaigns increase sales by an average of 20%. Here, the campaign implemented with Tokinomo increased them by over 200%.

Chipotle, the kings of TikTok challenges

With 1.7M followers and 35M likes, Chipotle has made the choice to focus on TikTok in recent months. The brand’s decision to invest in the social network is more than wise as generation Z represents more than 50% of its clientele and is particularly found on the platform. The company, moreover, realised that Generation Z takeaways were of the same value as millennials, but that Generation Z ordered 3-4 times a week.

In May 2019, Chipotle therefore decided to launch its first TikTok challenge, the #ChipotleLidFlip, during the summer, when its target consumers were on school holidays. At the same time, to boost the use of the hashtag and get as many people as possible to take part in the challenge, the brand also contacted Gen Z content creators who were avowed Chipotle «fans», such as Youtuber David Dobrik (18.3M subscribers on Youtube) to carry the campaign. His video, posted on TikTok, generated over 600K likes, 1700 comments and over 15K shares in just a few days!

Their first #ChipotleLidFlip challenge was taken up by hundreds of thousands of internet users around the world who tried their hand at the exercise by filming themselves in short videos while using the branded hashtag. Given the great success of this first challenge (the hashtag #ChipotleLidFlip now has over 328M views), Chipotle quickly measured the effectiveness of Influencer partnerships.

In August 2019, the brand did it again and partnered with Loren Gray (49M followers on TikTok) for National Lawyer’s Day with another hashtag challenge that was also a huge success:

Dunkin' creates an original drink, "The Charli", in collaboration with TikToker Charli D'Amelio

The famous donut brand Dunkin has created a signature drink with the famous TikToker Charli D’Amelio (136.3M followers on TikTok).  In September 2020, as part of their collaboration, Dunkin’ launched «The Charli», a new whole milk and caramel drink named after the content creator. The video of the influencer picking up her drink at one of the brand’s drive-throughs has been viewed millions of times. For this collaboration, a dance challenge was also planned using an original soundtrack that was featured in over 22.5K videos.

The video posted by Charli received over 4.7M likes, 53K comments and 144K shares. The brand also posted a contest on its Instagram account allowing 5 fans to win a virtual meeting with the TikToker. The conditions? Post a photo of themselves with the famous drink created as part of the partnership using the hashtag #CharliXDunkinContest and mentioning the brand. A good idea that allowed the brand to increase its visibility even more thanks to the numerous fan-generated contents.

The results of the collaboration far exceeded the brand’s expectations, selling «hundreds of thousands” of drinks in the first five days of the campaign’s launch. The launch day set a record for daily users on the Dunkin’ Donuts app, where users could pre-order the drink for direct pick-up. The Influence Marketing campaign with TikToker resulted in a 57% increase in daily downloads of the app. That’s a lot!

The company added that it saw a 20% increase in cold drink sales on the day of the launch, and a 45% increase in sales the following day. Due to the overwhelming success of this campaign, Dunkin’ decided to collaborate with TikToker again the following year, for a second signature drink in partnership with the brand: the «Charli Cold Foam». A partnership that never ceases to amaze us!

Relying on celebrities or micro-influencers, inviting KOLs to co-create a collection or a product, setting up 100% digital or in-store campaigns, brands in the food sector definitely have a wide range of creative devices when it comes to Influence Marketing!
