TikTok Launches New Editing Tools and Photo Mode

On October 06, 2022, TikTok announced to enable more creative freedom through new editing tools. Creators will be able to easily customize clips, sounds, images, and texts. Read now what you can use these updates for in your influencer marketing campaign.

Key Takeaways

  • The new TikTok editing tools allow:
  • Stacking, trimming and sharing videos.
  • Influencing the pace of a clip
  • Sound effects and other audio updates
  • The updates are available now in the U.S. and “most regions worldwide,” TikTok said.
  • With the new photo mode, TikTok is returning the favor to Instagram, but how successful the feature will be with TikTok users remains to be seen.

After social networks like Instagram and YouTube jumped on the trend for short-format videos, TikTok is now fighting back in the battle for users with new updates. With the new photo mode for photos on TikTok, the Chinese app is paying Instagram back for the fact that the Meta-owned network has so far copied everything that makes TikTok so successful.

This especially now that TikTok is the app with the most revenue in a quarter for the fourth time in a row. Together with the Chinese version Douyin, TikTok takes the first place of the top-selling non-gaming apps in the App Store and Google Play with approximately $914.4m.

So what is actually the difference between TikTok and Douyin? And how can brands use Douyin for their influencer marketing strategy? We’ll tell you on the Kolsquare blog.

Since short videos are at the heart of the app, it’s always been easy to edit the short moving image clips with a few simple steps, adding filters and music. Now, and perhaps to further defy the other platforms, TikTok offers advanced editing tools for videos in addition to the new photo mode. More on that in a moment.

The New Photo Mode on TikTok

As mentioned, the photo mode on TikTok is the company’s declaration of war against Instagram. Accordingly, TikTok users can post slides of still images that they can scroll through on the “For You” page.

Regarding the new photo mode, TikTok states:

“Photo Mode allows you to share carousel posts of still images that automatically display one after another. You can add music to soundtrack the images, which viewers can swipe through at their own pace.”

The photos from the carousels, which you can also accompany with music, are automatically displayed one after the other. According to TikTok, the new photo mode is logically supposed to promote the sharing of high-quality pictures on the app.

However, sharing images on TikTok seems very atypical at the moment, but who knows, maybe the update for more creative options will be a positive add-on to the app’s overall offering. Why not be one of the early adopters with your brand and try out how the photo mode works on TikTok right now. Of course, it could also be that the photo mode provokes resentment among users, similar to Instagram’s shift from photos to videos, which has shifted the actual core idea and focus of the app.

What Are the New Editing Tools on TikTok?

The update from early October 2022 offers many different ways to edit videos on TikTok. Of particular interest are the new tools for audio effects.

As mentioned earlier, users can now stack videos (picture-in-picture or video-in-video), trim and split them, and customize their speed, either speeding them up or slowing them down. Likewise, creators can now trim and cut the sounds they choose for their videos. You can also personalize the length of the audio track. Music plays a big role on the popular app, not least because TikTok grew out of the so-called Music.ly app. Songs are often the basis for many trends today, so songs that go viral on TikTok can already be at the top of chart lists as well.

Longer Captions for Videos on TikTok

Recently, TikTok users have the chance to share descriptions of up to 2,200 characters per post. This is a gigantic increase, as previously the app only allowed captions of up to 300 characters. Find on the Kolsquare blog: A guide to using hashtags on TikTok in 2022.

This also offers opportunities for influencer marketing, as descriptions can now be better optimized for search queries using keywords. It’s also interesting because many young people use TikTok as a search engine. Google itself noted that it now has almost 40% of young people searching for info on TikTok and Instagram instead of Google. What are the consequences, also for your influencer marketing, if TikTok and Instagram become the most important source of information? Read more about this on the Kolsquare blog.

It’s not clear if Google is tactically playing off this information and thus playing up the competition from this area, or if it’s a sustainable change.

As TikTok writes:

“This allows you to express more details about your creations, describing what your videos show, giving you the opportunity to get closer to your audience, generating more engagement while becoming more searchable and better recommended by TikTok to viewers.”On the Kolsquare blog, we regularly and reliably inform you about the latest updates from the industry, important trends in social media and news about influencer marketing.
